If you have visited the Soul Cafe drink counter, you have likely been welcomed by Soul Cafe Trainee, David Kole. In 2014, David joined the Friendship Bakery program where he learned the steps and responsibilities required to make delicious Challah and deliver orders. When the Soul Cafe Trainee Program was launched two years later, David interviewed with the head chef and was accepted into the program. David has worked in all areas of the restaurant including bussing, washing dishes, prepping food, assisting with inventory management, assisting servers, using the point of sale computer software, and working the cash register. However, the job where he feels most confident is making coffee, tea, and smoothies for customers at the drink counter. David shares that his favorite part about working in the Soul Cafe is, “Making drinks, baking pastries in the oven, interacting with customers, and making new friends.”
David is most proud of learning the different drink recipes. His skills have grown from accomplishing small steps in the Friendship Bakery to memorizing recipes and remembering the orders of regular customers. Soul Cafe Trainee Supervisor, Kim, shares, “David is a persistent team player, with a positive attitude who has grown to be more confident and independent in his work and personal life.”
We are happy to share, David Kole has been hired as the Assistant Barista at the Soul Cafe and is no longer a trainee!
When he is not working in the Soul Cafe, David also participates in the Soul Studio art program where he creates paintings, sculptures, pens, coasters, and other impressive artwork. His current project is creating a chess board with pieces in the woodshop. Everyone at Friendship Circle is very proud of David and his extraordinary growth at the cafe and in the studio.
