Play Therapy To Stay at Friendship Circle!

In winter of 2010, we launched a brand new program aimed at training our volunteers in “Play Therapy.” Play Therapy is a technique used by therapist to promote closeness and connection among volunteers and their child with special needs. As with all new programs, we were unsure of the success but confident in the plans that had been laid out by the instructor, Adam Brode, M.A., CCC-SLP. Next week, The Play Therapy program will come to a close. After reviewing the results from its first year, we are excited to report that The Play Therapy program was not only a success, but we are also extending its life at The Friendship Circle with the help of Michigan Jewish Institute. This fall The Friendship Circle is partnering with ACICS accredited, Michigan Jewish Institute to launch two dual-enrollment classes aimed at young adults interested in careers in Special Education, Addiction Treatment and Learning Disabilities. The classes are titled, “Exploring the Exceptional Child” and “Introduction to Speech and Language Pathology.” In these classes, students will be introduced to many of the leading therapies in the field of special needs as well as Play-based approaches that promote closeness and connection as a prerequisite to academic learning. All students who successfully complete the program will receive an MJI transcript that is transferable to their college of choice. Each class earns the student three college credits.
